Mauricio Pochettino has named a significantly younger United States men’s national team roster for the September international break, marking the commencement of his second era with the side. The squad features a distinct institutional pivot towards youth, with an average age of 22 years and nine months. Only 13 players were retained from the recent World Cup roster, while 12 members are from Major League Soccer, reflecting a deliberate move to broaden the national team pool.

The camp serves as an extended evaluation period for players ahead of the 2028 Olympics and the 2030 World Cup cycle. With the team scheduled to play four matches during the window, including friendlies against Concacaf rivals and other nations, the selection process highlights a governance approach that values performance over age. Pochettino cited Lamine Yamal as a precedent for integrating young talents, pointing to 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan as an example of this new philosophy.

Veterans Tyler Adams and Chris Richards are expected to provide leadership, with Richards thrust into a more prominent role following the exclusion of Tim Ream. The defensive unit remains a focal point for improvement, particularly as the team primarily operated out of a back three during the World Cup. Pochettino has brought in George Campbell and Neil Pierre, giving them opportunities to establish themselves as starters in a position that requires commanding centre backs who can keep pace with opposition.

The roster also includes eight members who have already featured for the USMNT at youth World Cups, providing a foundation for the upcoming cycles. The camp will simultaneously serve to evaluate players for Steve Cherundolo’s U-23 squad, which is preparing for the 2028 Olympics. This dual-purpose structure allows the US Soccer Federation to create a sustainable pipeline while addressing the immediate need for tactical flexibility.

The team will enter Concacaf Nations League play in November, a critical juncture for Pochettino’s tenure. Despite dominating Concacaf under previous manager Gregg Berhalter, the USMNT has yet to win silverware under Pochettino. The upcoming four-game stretch will serve as a trial for the squad’s readiness, with the manager aiming to set the stage for the 2030 World Cup while securing early success to quell questions about his long-term suitability.
