Bears HC Ben Johnson not worried about NFL figuring out his offense
Ben Johnson cites offensive versatility and quarterback unpredictability as key factors in maintaining competitive edge

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has stated he is not concerned about opposing teams deciphering his offensive scheme for the upcoming season, despite the heightened scrutiny following the team’s recent success. Johnson attributed the difficulty opponents face in defending the offence to its use of multiple formations and the unpredictability of quarterback Caleb Williams, particularly in unstructured plays.

The Bears secured an 11-win record in Johnson’s first season, capturing their first NFC North title since 2018 and recording their first playoff win since the 2010 season. While this turnaround rejuvenated the franchise, it also placed a target on the coaching staff, with opponents expected to study and attempt to slow down the high-powered offence.

Johnson emphasised that the coaching staff is prioritising self-scouting and adapting their game tape to maintain a competitive edge in the NFC. He noted that the team’s multiple formations and the tape they have produced make it difficult for rivals to feel they have a definitive beat on the strategy.

Regarding Williams, Johnson highlighted that the quarterback’s ability to execute plays outside of structure adds a unique layer of unpredictability. He stated that while Williams thrives when the structure of a play is present, his capacity to operate out of structure makes the offence even more difficult to defend.

The head coach credited the strength of his coaching staff as a key factor in the team’s success and noted that their ability to complement their existing tape is central to their preparation. Johnson indicated that the staff does not spend excessive time worrying about opponents figuring them out, relying instead on their internal processes and the development of their players.

As the Bears look to remain contenders in the NFC, Johnson believes that keeping the offence one step ahead of opposing defenses is achievable through their existing multiple approach. He expressed confidence that if the staff can elevate their performance in their second year together, the team will be in a favourable position for the season ahead.
