BCCI to sideline Suryakumar Yadav from selection talks as captaincy succession plan accelerates

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is preparing to exclude current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav from the upcoming selection meeting regarding the white-ball tour of Ireland and England. The decision underscores a decisive shift in governance strategy, as the board moves to address Yadav’s prolonged slump in form and initiate a structured succession plan for the leadership role.
The selection meeting is scheduled to take place around the one-off Test match against Afghanistan, commencing on 6 June. Discussions regarding the captaincy will occur on the sidelines of the BCCI’s apex council meeting on 3 June. This timing allows administrators to align leadership decisions with the immediate demands of the upcoming tour while managing the broader strategic outlook for the national side.
Yadav, who led India to defend the T20 title in March, is unlikely to be asked to attend the session. His exclusion follows a significant decline in performance since the 2024 T20 World Cup, a trend that has persisted into the recent Indian Premier League. The board’s reluctance to include him in the deliberations signals a clear intent to evaluate new leadership options without the incumbent’s presence.
Potential contenders for the captaincy include Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, and Sanju Samson. There is also a proposal that vice-captain Axar Patel may assume charge on an interim basis. This was reinforced by his omission from the long list of probables for the 2026 Asian Games, a move designed to allow selectors to explore new captaincy options. The current approach appears to be a formalisation of those earlier strategic considerations.
