BCCI reshuffles India T20I leadership with Iyer appointment and Yadav exclusion
Shreyas Iyer named captain and Tilak Varma vice-captain as selectors target long-term stability ahead of Olympic and World Cup campaigns.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the Indian T20I team, a move that signals a significant policy shift in the nation’s white-ball strategy. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia announced the decision on Saturday, confirming that Iyer will lead the side into a new two-year cycle designed to prepare the squad for the 2028 Olympics and the subsequent T20 World Cup.
In a notable administrative reversal, the board dropped Suryakumar Yadav from the T20I squad, ending his tenure as captain just three months after he led India to a third T20 World Cup title. This marks the first instance in recent history where a world title-winning skipper has been excluded from the team’s next international assignment, diverging from precedents where outgoing leaders such as Imran Khan in 1992 and Rohit Sharma in 2024 retired on a high.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar cited Iyer’s leadership record and consistency as the primary drivers for the appointment. Agarkar highlighted Iyer’s experience in leading franchise teams, including an IPL victory with the Kolkata Knight Riders, as evidence of his readiness for the national role. The 31-year-old, who has not played a T20I since December 2023, is viewed by the selection committee as a standout candidate capable of stabilising the team’s direction during the transitional period.
The decision to remove Yadav was attributed to a combination of his recent form and the board’s long-term planning. Agarkar noted that while the choice was difficult given the recent World Cup success, a post-tournament reassessment indicated that this shift was necessary for the upcoming cycle. The selectors emphasised that the move was strategic rather than punitive, aiming to align the squad’s composition with the demands of the next major global events.
Tilak Varma has been appointed vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel, who served as deputy during the 2026 World Cup triumph. The squad also features the maiden call-up of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who forced his way into the national reckoning with a dominant Indian Premier League season for the Rajasthan Royals. Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.3, including 72 sixes, prompting Agarkar to praise his ability to perform in high-pressure environments.
In parallel administrative updates, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been included in the ODI squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan, replacing the injured Virat Kohli. Additionally, Delhi pacer Prince Yadav has been retained for the tours of Ireland and England following his ODI call-up. The newly constituted T20I squad for these tours includes Iyer, Varma, Sooryavanshi, and Axar Patel, among others, as the board attempts to balance experience with emerging talent.
