Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 15-year-old sensation, called up to India’s T20 squad
Shreyas Iyer appointed captain as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns maiden call-up

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a pivotal shift in its Twenty20 International (T20I) strategy, appointing Shreyas Iyer as captain and calling up 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to the senior squad. The selections, confirmed on Saturday, precede a two-match series against Ireland later this month and a five-match tour of England in July.

Iyer’s appointment marks a departure from the current leadership structure, with Suryakumar Yadav relinquishing the armband following a period of inconsistent performance. Yadav, who led India to T20 World Cup triumph on home soil three months prior, scored only 242 runs in nine innings at the tournament and managed an average of 20.76 across 13 IPL innings for the Mumbai Indians. Selection panel chairman Ajit Agarkar described the decision as a necessary reassessment of the team’s direction following the World Cup.

In contrast, Iyer brings a recent record of success, having guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and leading the Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish in 2025. Agarkar highlighted Iyer’s leadership capabilities and his status as a standout candidate for national selection, noting that his domestic form justified his return to the international captaincy after his last T20I appearance in December 2023.

The most notable inclusion in the 15-player squad is Sooryavanshi, whose performances for the Rajasthan Royals have drawn immediate attention. The left-handed opener topped the IPL scoring charts with 776 runs, including a century and five half-centuries, while breaking Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes in a single season. He also became the first player in IPL history to be named both Most Valuable Player and Best Emerging Player in the same campaign.

Agarkar cited Sooryavanshi’s ability to single-handedly drive his team toward the playoffs as a key factor in his selection, describing him as a "game-changer" capable of performing under high pressure. Should he make his debut against Ireland or England, the 15-year-old would become the youngest player to represent the Indian men’s senior team, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record of debuting at age 16.

The BCCI simultaneously released the squad for the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which begins on 24 September. The Asian Games roster features veteran bowler Jasprit Bumrah and includes Sooryavanshi and Iyer, maintaining continuity in leadership and youth development across both international commitments. The tournament final is scheduled for 3 October.
