Barcelona weigh Kounde as defensive contingency amid transfer constraints

Barcelona are navigating a complex transfer landscape, with coach Hansi Flick considering Jules Kounde as a potential centre-back for the upcoming season. According to Mundo Deportivo, the club faces significant defensive reinforcement needs, a situation complicated by current market conditions and a lack of cost-effective external options.
Although the club has reportedly secured the services of Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon, the defensive line remains a priority area for review. Kounde’s potential deployment in central defence is contingent on a shortage of natural centre-backs, particularly if Ronald Araujo departs the club.
Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin are currently regarded as the preferred options in central defence, with Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen serving as backups. However, Araujo’s future at the club has been described as murky, prompting the coaching staff to identify Kounde as a viable internal replacement should ideal candidates fail to materialise in the market.
The club is also addressing the right-back position through internal pathways. Eric Garcia is identified as a strong option for the role, alongside Hector Fort and Xavi Espart. This approach reflects an acknowledgement of Kounde’s inconsistent form in central defence last season, with the club offering him a pathway back to his preferred position if required.
Concurrently, Barcelona are actively pursuing a permanent deal for Joao Cancelo. While the Portuguese international possesses the versatility to play right-back, he is viewed primarily as a left-flank option. The club’s strategy suggests a preference for utilising existing squad depth to mitigate the challenges posed by the current transfer market.
