Barcelona open title defence with 5-0 rout of Elche

Defending champions Barcelona have begun their bid for a third successive La Liga crown with a commanding 5-0 victory over Elche at Martinez Valero Stadium. The result serves as a strong institutional statement ahead of a competitive title race, following Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Espanyol the previous day.

Manager Hansi Flick managed squad rotation to allow key players to regain match sharpness following Spain’s World Cup triumph. While teenage winger Lamine Yamal started on the right, he was not at his peak performance level, though the overall display remained dominant. Midfielder Gavi also featured, drawing attention with a pink haircut in celebration of the national team’s recent success.

Raphinha opened the scoring in the 14th minute after being fouled by Victor Chust in the box. He converted the penalty to give Barcelona the lead. Karim Adeyemi, playing on the left, started shakily but grew into the game, scoring the second goal before the break after being set up by Raphinha.

In the second half, former Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon made his debut as a substitute.
