Axel Witsel retires from Belgium duty after 140 appearances
The 37-year-old midfielder ends his international career with 12 goals and a third-place World Cup finish in 2018.
Axel Witsel has retired from international football with Belgium after making 140 appearances and scoring 12 goals for the national team.
Yahoo Sports reported that Witsel, 37, will continue his domestic career with Nice in Ligue 1. His retirement does not mark the end of his playing career.
Witsel made his Belgium debut in 2008 and represented the country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he played four matches. He also featured at Euro 2016.
Belgium finished third at the 2018 World Cup, with Witsel part of the squad. He scored his only tournament goal for Belgium during the 2016 European Championship.
Witsel began his senior club career with Standard Liège before later playing for Benfica, Zenit St Petersburg, Tianjin Tianhai, Borussia Dortmund, Atlético Madrid, Girona and Nice. He won the Belgian Cup and two league titles during his time at Standard Liège.
