Atlanta’s panda loan brings US–China ties into public view

Two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, have arrived in Atlanta from southwestern China under a 10-year loan to Zoo Atlanta. The agreement is with the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
The pandas landed shortly before 7am local time after a 16-hour charter flight, according to Al Jazeera. They are expected to spend about a month in quarantine at the zoo before meeting visitors; a debut date has not been confirmed.
The loan was finalised in April, before last week’s summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The article describes the arrival as a gesture of renewed friendship between the two countries, while Xi has characterised the loan programme as an example of friendship between Chinese and American people.
The agreement makes Zoo Atlanta one of three US zoos to house giant pandas. The zoo last had pandas in 2024. Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, were born in 2020.
The loan comes within China’s longstanding practice of sending pandas abroad on loan, often framed as “panda diplomacy”. The transfer’s timing after the summit has drawn attention, though the agreement itself was settled months earlier.
