At least five killed as Amazon cargo plane crashes at Miami airport
A 21 Air-operated Boeing 767 overshot the runway at Miami International Airport, struck vehicles and caught fire. The US National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
At least five people were killed and five injured after an Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, struck several vehicles and caught fire, according to Miami-Dade County officials.
The aircraft overran the runway at about 2pm local time after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Three of the injured people were in critical condition, while two others suffered less serious injuries.
Officials said it was too early to establish whether those killed were aboard the aircraft or in the vehicles it struck. The crash trapped the pilot and copilot in the cockpit, while other people were trapped in cars, including one person beneath a vehicle.
Flights were halted at the airport for much of the afternoon, with about 250 delays reported later in the day. Fire crews were still dealing with a fuel leak several hours after the crash.
The flight was operated by North Carolina-based cargo carrier 21 Air. The 32-year-old Boeing 767 had been converted from passenger use to cargo operations in 2015.
The US National Transportation Safety Board is sending an investigative team led by its chair, Jennifer Homendy. Amazon said it would co-operate with the investigation and expressed condolences to those affected.
