At least 67 killed in Sudan gold mine collapse
Survivors said people remained missing after the collapse at the al-Zara mine in West Kordofan, while rescue efforts were hindered by a lack of machinery.
At least 67 people were killed when the al-Zara gold mine collapsed in Nuhud, West Kordofan, according to survivors and a medical group cited by France 24.
Survivors said the collapse occurred late Tuesday and affected several shafts, trapping workers underground. Many people remained missing as search and rescue operations continued.
The medical group said the death toll could rise as crews searched for survivors and people trapped beneath soil and rubble. A lack of machinery was reported to have hindered the operation.
The mine is in an area controlled by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has been fighting the country’s military for more than three years.
Sudan is a major gold producer, but mine collapses are common amid poor safety standards. Similar reported incidents killed 14 miners in 2023 and 38 in 2021. The precise cause of the al-Zara collapse has not been reported.
