At least 14 killed in weapons depot blast in Syria’s Idlib
Secondary explosions hampered firefighting near Sarmada as emergency teams searched for survivors in the rubble.
At least 14 people were killed and 11 injured when a temporary depot storing weapons and war remnants exploded near Sarmada in Syria’s Idlib province, Syrian state television reported.
The blast occurred at Burj Elnumra village in northern Idlib’s countryside. Thick smoke rose from a fire at the site for hours, while secondary explosions hindered firefighting efforts.
Emergency teams were dispatched after the explosion and were searching for survivors trapped under the rubble. An Associated Press photographer reported that bodies had been recovered at the scene.
Some Syrian defence ministry personnel were among those injured, according to Reuters. The ministry said the depot held weapons and munitions dating from the country’s 2011–2024 uprising and civil war.
Authorities have not clarified what caused the explosion. The reported toll may change as rescue operations continue. A separate explosion involving an ammunition vehicle in Binnish, also in Idlib province, reportedly killed five people on 1 September.
