Astronaut senior Adarian Dotson commits to FIU after rapid rise from novice to Division I recruit
Florida International University secures the offensive line prospect, who cites proximity to home and access to fishing charters as primary factors in his decision.
Astronaut High School senior Adarian Dotson has committed to play college football at Florida International University (FIU), marking the culmination of a rapid transition from complete novice to Division I recruit. Dotson, who previously focused on fishing and video games, had no prior experience with the sport before entering high school. His recruitment was initiated by War Eagles coaches who identified his physical potential—standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 285 pounds—prompting his immediate placement on the varsity team during his freshman year.
The shift from a non-athlete to a collegiate prospect required Dotson to navigate a significant learning curve, particularly regarding the technical intricacies of the offensive line position. He identified mastering stances and cadences as his primary hurdle, relying on guidance from senior teammates to accelerate his development. This foundational work allowed him to compete effectively against high-calibre opposition, including the 2024 state champions Cocoa during his sophomore year, an experience he described as validating his ability to compete with offered players.
In an era defined by volatility within the college football transfer portal, Dotson’s decision to remain at Astronaut for all four years of his high school career stands as a notable exception. He emphasised the importance of maintaining connections with his original teammates and his head coach, with whom he was part of the inaugural class. This loyalty provided a stable environment for his growth, allowing him to accumulate offers and develop into a consistent performer on the field.
Dotson selected FIU primarily for its geographical proximity to his home in Cocoa, which he noted provided essential access to fishing charters for his future interests. On the field, he describes himself as an aggressive and fast player capable of operating on the outside or interior of the line. With his high school team utilising a run-heavy offence, Dotson is currently focusing on refining his pass protection skills to adapt to the more varied demands of the collegiate level.
Looking ahead, Dotson has set clear objectives for his final season with the War Eagles. He aims to lead the offensive line in helping Astronaut return to the state playoffs for the first time since 2020 and secure the Hudson Trophy. His commitment to FIU represents both a personal achievement in overcoming a lack of early experience and a strategic move to balance athletic ambition with personal lifestyle preferences.
