Aston Villa hold off Tottenham rally to secure first league win
Tottenham remain without a league victory after falling 3-0 behind before scoring twice late in north London.
Aston Villa defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in north London on Saturday to claim their first Premier League win of the season, according to Yahoo Sports.
Villa moved three goals ahead through Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia before Tottenham mounted a late response. Tottenham’s first goal came through a Matty Cash deflection from Conor Gallagher’s effort, while Jan Paul van Hecke headed home in stoppage time.
The result leaves Tottenham without a league win this season. Yahoo Sports reported that the club had not scored in the competition before the match and described the start as their worst in the Premier League era.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi said his side had been “too fragile” when defending, while Villa manager Unai Emery said the win would build confidence after a difficult opening. Villa had taken one point from their first four league matches.
The defeat adds pressure to Tottenham’s recruitment strategy after the club reportedly spent more than £300 million on new players. Villa’s squad had also undergone significant changes following last season’s Europa League win.
