Arteta backs Lewis-Skelly retention as Arsenal prepare for league opener

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has stated he is "100 per cent" confident that teenage midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly will remain at the club through the end of the transfer window. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Premier League opener against Coventry, Arteta addressed reported interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, who are described as long-term admirers of the 19-year-old.

Arteta emphasised the strategic importance of retaining players developed within the club's academy system. "We need to look after them in a very special way because they bring value that is very difficult to find," Arteta said, adding that the club aims to protect and develop such assets to ensure they become vital to the squad.

The manager also addressed the necessity of difficult conversations regarding squad selection and potential player departures. With players such as Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Ethan Nwaneri linked with moves away, Arteta acknowledged the complexity of managing a deep squad while ensuring individual players feel valued. He described the process as requiring honesty and transparency, stating that while these discussions are tough, they are essential for making the best decisions for both the club and the players' careers.

Attention also turned to the fitness of new signing Bruno Guimaraes, who was withdrawn at half-time during the Community Shield victory over Manchester City. Arteta indicated uncertainty over whether the Brazil midfielder will be available for the upcoming match against Coventry, noting that while his recovery is "evolving really well," a final assessment is required.

The arrival of Guimaraes, alongside Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, has introduced new competition within the squad. Arteta highlighted that new signings bring energy and a desire to prove themselves, which he believes lifts the overall level of the team.
