Newly promoted Coventry City struggled to contain the Gunners, failing to register a single tackle until the 69th minute in a match that underscored Arsenal’s depth and tactical cohesion.
Arsenal have commenced their Premier League title defence with a decisive 3-0 home victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. The result extends the momentum generated by the Gunners’ 3-0 Community Shield win against Manchester City the previous weekend, signalling a strong institutional start to the new season.
The match highlighted a significant disparity in competitive intensity, with Coventry becoming the first team since Opta began collecting data in 2007 to have no touches in the opposition box or make a tackle in the first half of a Premier League game. The promoted side finally registered their first tackle in the 69th minute, by which point they were already trailing by three goals.
New signing Christos Tzolis played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s attacking structure, providing two assists on his Premier League debut. The Greece international was involved in the first two goals, winning the ball for the opening chance and delivering the cross for the second. Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute, while Bukayo Saka added a second in the 23rd minute after a deflection by Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
Martin Ødegaard completed the scoring just four minutes into the second half. The goal resulted from a miscued finish that deceived Rushworth, following a combination between Ødegaard, Saka, and Ben White through the right channel. The performance demonstrated the effectiveness of Arsenal’s midfield, with Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly controlling the tempo.
The absence of new midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who missed the match with a thigh injury sustained during the Community Shield, was offset by the depth of the squad.
