Arsenal secure Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes in £75m deal

Arsenal have completed the signing of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, adding one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders to Mikel Arteta’s squad. The North London club confirmed the deal on Saturday, with the 28-year-old Brazil international agreeing to a four-year contract that includes a further one-year option. British media reports indicate the fee is approximately 75 million pounds ($101 million).

Guimaraes, who made 195 appearances for Newcastle, cited a desire for a new challenge as the primary driver for the move. In a statement on the club’s website, he expressed excitement after speaking with Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta. “I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge,” Guimaraes said, adding that he hoped to help the squad achieve their dreams in a season featuring tough games.

The transfer follows a significant period of transition at Newcastle United, where Guimaraes had been a central figure since joining from Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022. The midfielder’s departure comes after the exits of key players Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, as well as the resignation of former manager Eddie Howe, who was replaced by Matthias Jaissle. Newcastle owner Sarah-Jane Wilson acknowledged Guimaraes’s clear desire to leave, describing his conduct as “very emotionally” driven, despite the club’s initial resistance to selling their captain.

Guimaraes leaves Newcastle with a substantial record of achievement, including 31 goals in all competitions. He captained the side to League Cup success in 2025, becoming the first Newcastle captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy. He also played a pivotal role in the club’s qualification for the Champions League in both 2023 and 2025 under Howe, having previously helped guide the club out of relegation trouble upon his arrival.

Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta highlighted Guimaraes’s versatility as a key factor in the acquisition, noting his ability to operate as both a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box player. Berta stated that Guimaraes would allow Arteta to further develop the team’s playing style and increase internal competitiveness, which is essential for maintaining the standards required to win major trophies. The signing adds to an existing midfield core that includes Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and captain Martin Odegaard.

The arrival of Guimaraes is viewed as a strategic move to manage the workload of key players, particularly Rice, who was instrumental in Arsenal lifting their first league title in 22 years last season. By introducing another elite option, Arsenal aim to sustain their intensity throughout the campaign. The Premier League champions begin their new season at home against promoted Coventry City on 21 August.
