Arsenal secure Ezri Konsa in reported £51m move from Aston Villa

Premier League champions Arsenal have completed the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth £51m ($69m). The 28-year-old agreed to a long-term contract just hours before the club’s title defence opener against Coventry, marking a significant addition to the squad as they aim for successive league titles.

The move addresses immediate defensive concerns for manager Mikel Arteta, particularly with France international William Saliba sidelined for several months with a back problem. Konsa is expected to partner Gabriel Magalhaes at centre-back, providing stability at the heart of the defence. His arrival also offers cover for Jurrien Timber, who is managing a long-term groin issue.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta praised the new signing’s versatility, noting that Konsa is comfortable in both central defence and at right-back. Berta described the defender as a player of high quality whose athleticism and tactical intelligence have made him one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers.

Konsa, who was a regular for England at the World Cup this year, indicated that conversations with teammates Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka helped convince him to make the switch. He expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to train and play with his national team colleagues, citing a desire to continue winning after securing the Europa League with Aston Villa last season.

The signing is part of a broader recruitment drive by Arsenal, which has already secured the services of Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier since winning their first English title for 22 years. The transfer window closes on September 1, with reports suggesting Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez is also on the club’s radar.

Konsa completed his medical at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground on Thursday and is expected to be paraded before fans ahead of Friday’s match. He could make his debut against his former club when Arsenal travel to Aston Villa on August 31.
