Arsenal move closer to long-term Mikel Arteta contract extension
BBC Sport reports that negotiations have progressed, with Arteta’s current agreement due to expire in nine months.
Arsenal are close to finalising a long-term contract extension for manager Mikel Arteta, according to BBC Sport, although the agreement has not yet been signed or officially announced.
Well-placed sources cited by BBC Sport say discussions have advanced and there is confidence the Spaniard will renew. Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick has reportedly described the deal as a “matter of time”.
The proposed agreement is expected to improve substantially on Arteta’s current terms, but its length and final financial details have not been specified. His existing contract has nine months remaining.
Arteta was appointed in December 2019 and is described as the Premier League’s longest-serving manager. During his tenure, Arsenal have returned to the Champions League and won their first Premier League title in 22 years.
The negotiations also reflect Arteta’s reported influence over first-team football and the club’s transfer strategy. BBC Sport says Arsenal have invested heavily in the squad and share the manager’s ambitions for its development.
