Oregon’s Moore seeks Mariota’s counsel as Heisman ambitions take centre stage
Dante Moore reaches out to Marcus Mariota, Cam Newton, and Peyton Manning to refine his game and legacy at Oregon.

Oregon quarterback Dante Moore has initiated contact with former Ducks star Marcus Mariota to secure guidance ahead of his final season with the university. The 21-year-old signal-caller is positioning himself to emulate Mariota’s historic tenure, which saw the former player win the Heisman Trophy in 2014 and lead the Ducks to a national championship game.
Moore’s outreach extends beyond the Eugene campus, with the quarterback also contacting NFL veterans Cam Newton and Peyton Manning to refine his technical craft in preparation for the NFL draft. This strategic networking underscores the high expectations placed on Moore, who is tasked with leading the program to its first championship while establishing a legacy comparable to Mariota’s.
Mariota, currently entering his 12th season in the NFL, remains a defining figure in Oregon history. His impact is cemented by an athletic facility bearing his name and the enduring reverence of the fanbase, with future prospects such as Dillon Gabriel and Dylan Raiola previously seeking permission to wear his No. 8 jersey.
Speaking to reporters, Moore described Mariota as a "special talent," citing his speed, mental progressions, and ability to utilise his legs to create plays. Moore emphasised that his admiration for Mariota extends to his conduct off the field, noting the former quarterback’s role as a father and his character in the wider community.
The current offseason has been intensive for Moore, involving travel to Tokyo, a launched Heisman campaign, and an appearance on a video game cover. After sitting out a year to observe and learn before taking over the starting role and guiding the team to a major bowl victory, Moore is now focused on translating these experiences into sustained success.
Moore stated his intent to "follow in his footsteps," highlighting Mariota’s approach to family and life outside of football as key areas for personal development. With significant pressure to perform as a top NFL draft prospect and a Heisman finalist, Moore views these mentorship conversations as essential to navigating the demands of his final collegiate season.
