Arsenal and PSG set for Champions League final in Budapest
Arsenal aim to end their record wait for European glory as they prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the final on 30 May 2026.

Arsenal are set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final in Budapest on 30 May 2026. The match marks the North London club’s second-ever final appearance, having previously lost to Barcelona in 2006. A victory would secure Arsenal’s first Champions League title, ending their status as the club with the most appearances in the competition without winning it.
The Gunners have played 225 fixtures in the competition proper, the highest number of games played by any club without winning the trophy. They secured their place in the final by defeating Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals. Atletico Madrid have featured in more finals than any other club without winning, having lost to Bayern Munich in 1974 and Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016.
Both Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have already secured their respective domestic league titles this season. PSG aim to become only the eighth team in history to retain the Champions League trophy. The French club enter the final as the top scorers in the tournament with 44 goals.
Arsenal enter the match with the competition’s best defensive record, boasting nine clean sheets. The statistical contrast between the two sides sets the stage for a tactical contest between Arsenal’s defence and PSG’s attack. Mikel Arteta manages the Arsenal side.
Other clubs have also struggled to convert European appearances into Champions League success. Olympiacos, the most successful side in Greek football, have never progressed past the quarter-finals in the competition, despite winning the Europa Conference League in 2023/24. Galatasaray reached the semi-finals in 1988, while Dynamo Kyiv’s best run was also a semi-final exit in 1998/99.
Historical context shows that Arsenal’s wait is unique in scale. While Olympiacos made their first appearance in the European Cup in 1959/60, and Galatasaray won the UEFA Cup and Super Cup in 2000, neither has matched Arsenal’s volume of Champions League games without a victory. Dynamo Kyiv, featuring players such as Andriy Shevchenko, also reached the semi-finals in 1998/99 before losing to Bayern Munich.
The upcoming final in Budapest represents a significant milestone for both clubs. For Arsenal, it is an opportunity to break a long-standing historical pattern. For PSG, it is a chance to join an exclusive group of teams that have retained the trophy.
