Arkansas freshman Carter Rutenbar has been medically cleared of a concussion following an injury sustained during the Razorbacks' season opener against Oklahoma. The incident occurred in the top of the second inning at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where the left-handed hitter took a grounder directly off his nose. Following the contest, head coach Dave Van Horn confirmed that while Rutenbar did not suffer a concussion, his availability for the remainder of the series remains undetermined pending further medical assessment of a potential nasal fracture.
The severity of the impact was immediately apparent, with Rutenbar requiring multiple towels to clean up a bloody mess before exiting the game to enter the concussion protocol. Despite the injury, the freshman demonstrated a willingness to return, standing in the tunnel with his helmet on for the duration of the match and expressing a desire to stay in the game. Teammate Camden Kozeal described Rutenbar as an extremely tough kid, noting the player's background in high school football contributed to his resilience despite the bleeding.
