Argentina squad manages fitness concerns ahead of World Cup opener
The Argentine Football Association confirms the squad is addressing minor injuries as preparations intensify in Kansas City, with Messi expected to be fit for the June 16 clash against Algeria.

Argentina’s national team held its first World Cup preparation session in the United States on Monday, marking a significant logistical shift as the defending champions establish their base camp in Kansas City, Missouri. The squad, currently ranked number three in the world, has assembled for final preparations ahead of the tournament, with officials managing a roster that includes several players dealing with fitness concerns.
Lionel Messi, the 38-year-old captain and Inter Miami midfielder, trained separately from the main group during the session. The separation was necessitated by muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, a condition that has affected the player since May 24. Rather than participating in full squad drills, Messi worked on specific exercises alongside other teammates who are also managing physical setbacks.
The Argentine Football Association provided an update on the squad’s medical status, noting that players suffering from "niggles and injuries" are working with the physiotherapy team on the pitch. Officials stated that these individuals are making good progress, indicating a structured approach to recovery rather than a prolonged absence.
Despite the individualised training load for the captain, the expectation remains that Messi will be fit for Argentina’s tournament opener against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City. The team has one final tune-up match scheduled before the main event, set to face Iceland on June 9 in Auburn, Alabama.
Messi’s participation in this tournament represents his record sixth World Cup appearance. Since his debut in 2005, the midfielder has established himself as Argentina’s all-time leader in both caps, with 198 appearances, and goals, with 116. As an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and two-time MLS MVP, his availability is a central component of the squad’s strategy for the 2026 tournament.
