Argentina overturn deficit to set up World Cup final against Spain
The defending champions advance to the title clash in New Jersey, ending England’s hopes of a second final appearance since 1966.

Argentina secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a dramatic 2-1 victory over England at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday. The defending champions overturned a second-half deficit to defeat the Three Lions, setting up a title showdown against Spain in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
England appeared poised to advance after Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute strike gave them a 1-0 lead. However, Argentina staged a decisive late rally, scoring twice in the final five minutes. Enzo Fernández equalised with a long-range effort in the 85th minute, before substitute Lautaro Martínez headed in the winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time.
The result extends Lionel Messi’s remarkable tournament record. The 39-year-old provided the assist for both late goals, bringing his tally to 10 assists in World Cup knockout stages. This achievement places him six clear of any other player in at least the past 60 years, while his involvement in a goal or assist in 11 consecutive World Cup games dating back to 2022 marks the longest such streak since 1966.
England coach Thomas Tuchel cited a loss of momentum after taking the lead as the primary factor in the defeat. He told the BBC that his side became too passive and failed to retain possession, allowing Argentina to create numerous chances. Despite goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making crucial saves to keep England ahead for much of the second half, the team could not withstand the final surge.
Argentina’s victory marks a historic milestone, making them the first team to score multiple winning goals in second-half stoppage time in a single World Cup. They now face Spain, the reigning European champions, in the final. This will be the first World Cup final between the top-ranked teams in the FIFA rankings since the system was introduced in 1992.
England’s campaign concludes with a third-place playoff against France in Miami Gardens on Saturday. Argentina, seeking their fourth title, aims to join Italy and Brazil as the only nations to win back-to-back World Cups. The final is scheduled for Sunday in New Jersey.
