Infielder arrives from Triple-A Norfolk with strong offensive metrics

The Baltimore Orioles announced on July 16 the promotion of infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand from Triple-A Norfolk to the major league roster. The move places him on the active squad ahead of a three-game series against the Houston Astros.

Encarnacion-Strand has posted a batting average of .273, with 17 home runs and an on-base plus slugging (OPS) of .863 across 257 plate appearances for Norfolk this season. The statistical output from the Triple-A level has prompted the organisation’s decision to elevate him to the majors.

The infielder’s path to Baltimore began in April when he was traded from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash considerations. This transaction followed his designation for assignment by Cincinnati, marking the end of his tenure with the National League club.

Prior to joining the Orioles, Encarnacion-Strand played for the Reds from 2023 to 2025. During his time in Cincinnati, he recorded a batting average of .233 with 21 home runs in 501 plate appearances over parts of three seasons. His 2024 campaign was significantly curtailed, with the player appearing in only 29 games before undergoing wrist surgery in June.

The injury that sidelined him in 2024 occurred when he was hit by a pitch from then-Rangers pitcher Michael Lorenzen, who was previously a member of the Reds roster. Originally, the Reds had acquired Encarnacion-Strand, along with Steve Hajjar and Spencer Steer, from the Minnesota Twins in August 2022 in exchange for pitcher Tyler Mahle.
