Apple is reportedly developing a smart home security camera that would describe events in text rather than provide video footage, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, as reported by The Verge.

Gurman says the camera is part of a planned Apple smart home ecosystem and would use on-device AI to analyse its surroundings. The product may also include facial recognition to detect when someone enters a room.

The report describes the camera as having a low frame rate and says it would not record video. Those details have not been independently verified, and Apple has not confirmed the product, its features or availability.

Apple Home already offers a “Detect Activity” setting for some HomeKit Secure Video cameras. It stops video streaming and recording while continuing to track motion, a function with some similarities to the reported camera.
