Apple is reportedly developing small home security cameras that use artificial intelligence to analyse activity without recording video, according to Engadget, which cites Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. Apple has not announced the devices.

The cameras are described as cylindrical and designed to accompany an unannounced Apple smart-home display. Gurman says they would have a very low frame rate and could notify users when someone enters a room, providing a text description of whether the person is recognised.

The report leaves open whether the cameras could capture still images. It says they would use facial recognition, but the absence of video recording does not establish that no images would be captured or processed.

The devices are part of a wider reported smart-home push. Gurman has also predicted a home hub later in October, along with more powerful HomePod mini and Apple TV models. Those products have not been announced, and no camera launch timing has been reported.

Gurman says the camera technology would be similar to that reportedly planned for camera-equipped AirPods, which would analyse low-resolution still images without taking photos or recording video. The reported home camera’s technical details remain unclear.
