Antonelli’s Monza victory leaves Russell facing podium jeers

Kimi Antonelli has won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after recovering from 19th on the grid and overtaking Mercedes teammate George Russell in the closing stages.

Russell was jeered by Italian fans when he stepped onto the podium and again while receiving his second-place trophy. The source, Yahoo Sports, does not establish why the crowd reacted that way.

Antonelli started from 19th after grid penalties for exceeding his engine allocation. He moved through the field before passing Russell on fresher tyres with four laps remaining.

Russell said he had completed most of the race on one set of hard tyres and congratulated Antonelli on what was reported as the first Italian victory at Monza in 60 years.

He said Mercedes’ decision to split its cars during a virtual safety-car period was understandable, although he was surprised Antonelli stopped. Max Verstappen finished third for Red Bull.

Formula One is scheduled to race next in Madrid.
