Amanda Lear alleges Miley Cyrus copied 1978 song
The French singer says Cyrus’s track “Redlights” resembles her song “The Sphinx”, but says she is not pursuing legal action.
French singer and composer Amanda Lear has accused Miley Cyrus of copying elements of her 1978 song “The Sphinx” in Cyrus’s track “Redlights”.
Lear raised the allegation publicly, pointing to apparent similarities between the two songs. France 24 reported that Cyrus’s track appears on her reportedly tenth album, “Bass Persuades”, released on 18 September.
Lear said her record label, Universal, and the publishers of “The Sphinx” wanted acknowledgement of the alleged plagiarism. She said she wrote the lyrics to the original song.
However, Lear clarified that she was not threatening a lawsuit or seeking retaliation. She said she had only drawn attention to the situation by describing herself as flattered.
The source package contains no independent musical or legal assessment establishing plagiarism, and no response from Cyrus. Lear, who has released more than 20 albums, became known as a singer after working as a model and being associated with Salvador Dalí and London’s 1960s music scene.
