Alonso’s Chelsea debut: Pedro hat-trick and Delap doubts in Sydney thriller

Xabi Alonso oversaw his first match as Chelsea manager in a 6-4 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers at Accor Stadium in Sydney. The result served as a preliminary indicator of the squad’s composition under the new regime, with the performance defined by the contrasting fortunes of the club’s attacking options.

Joao Pedro was the standout performer, scoring a nine-minute hat-trick to reinforce his status as the primary striker. Alonso described the forward as "very, very hungry" and "determined to have a great season," noting that Pedro’s display showcased the power and pace required for the Premier League.

The opening goal came from 17-year-old trialist Dastan Satpaev, who scored in spectacular fashion in the sixth minute. The Kazakhstan international was playing on a trial basis as his formal transfer from FC Kairat cannot be completed until 12 August. Alonso, who faced Satpaev during his time at Real Madrid, praised the teenager’s quickness and ability to attack channels, confirming he was impressed by the performance.

Conversely, Liam Delap struggled to make an impact, continuing a pattern of poor form since his £30m move from Ipswich Town. The forward’s lack of confidence has intensified speculation regarding his future, with Chelsea advancing talks to sign 35-year-old Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion as an experienced replacement. Welbeck has reportedly agreed personal terms, although Brighton has not commented on the ongoing negotiations.

Alonso utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation, similar to that employed by former manager Enzo Maresca. Several academy players impressed in the absence of senior stars, including midfielders Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Reggie Walsh, and Reggie Watson, as well as left-back Landon Emenalo. Winger Jamie Gittens also stood out, scoring his third goal in three pre-season appearances.

The club is also in discussions to sign 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford to add leadership to the squad. When asked about the recruitment of older players like Welbeck and Henderson, Alonso stated the need for balance and a complete squad, asserting that the club has a clear plan in place.

Despite the victory, Alonso acknowledged the team was still adjusting to jet lag and described the performance as sloppy and imperfect. The match offered only a glimpse of the tactical direction for the upcoming season, with record signing Morgan Rogers and other players still on holiday following the World Cup.
