Alonso’s Chelsea complete grueling global tour ahead of Premier League opener

Chelsea FC has completed a comprehensive pre-season tour spanning Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia under the direction of new manager Xabi Alonso. The club travelled 24,561 miles across five matches, securing two victories, including a 3-0 win against AC Milan and a 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers. The campaign served as a foundational exercise for Alonso, focusing on establishing a culture of accountability and integrating tactical adjustments amidst significant travel fatigue.

The tour’s intensity was evident from the outset, with Alonso demonstrating high personal standards by running at a pace of four minutes 30 seconds per kilometre to shake off jetlag. His hands-on approach was further highlighted during a staff match, where he set up most of the goals and showcased his technical quality with a 25-yard half-volley. Players such as Levi Colwill and Romeo Lavia noted the manager’s elite-level passing ability, describing it as a privilege to work with a former top-tier midfielder who leads by example.

Tactically, the squad began to shift away from the 4-2-3-1 formation used by predecessors, experimenting with a back three system utilising wing-backs, a structure Alonso employed to win the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. The arrival of set-piece coach Austin MacPhee immediately influenced this phase, contributing to two goals from corners during the AC Milan fixture. Joao Pedro emerged as the standout performer, scoring six goals in five games, while new signings Danny Welbeck and Mykhailo Mudryk joined the squad mid-tour.

Off the pitch, the tour emphasised bonding and cultural integration, with players engaging in activities ranging from visits to North Sydney Pool to sponsor events near Bondi Beach. Young talent Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli attracted media attention for his performances, while Cole Palmer held his first pre-match media conference, displaying the charisma that led Alonso to label him a "leader". The club also managed the return of Mudryk, who received an emotional welcome after a 20-month absence due to a doping ban.

Chelsea now return to their Cobham training base for two weeks of preparation before facing Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge on 15 August. The squad’s primary objective remains the Premier League opener against Fulham on 24 August, with Alonso having used the global tour to mitigate the fatigue and logistical challenges that defined the previous season’s US tour.
