Jordan took the lead in the 36th minute through Nizar al-Rashdan, capitalising on a loose ball after Mousa al-Tamari failed to collect a cross. The goal offered the debutants hope of securing their first World Cup victory, but Algeria responded with a structured second-half performance to level the scores.
The equaliser arrived in the 69th minute via a header from Nadhir Benbouali, assisted by a Riyad Mahrez corner. Algeria completed the turnaround in the 82nd minute when Amine Gouri recovered a loose ball following a header to tap in the winner, ending Jordan’s campaign.
The match outcome leaves Algeria third in Group J with three points, level with second-placed Austria. Both nations face critical fixtures in the final group stage, with Algeria scheduled to play Austria on Saturday. Jordan will conclude their tournament against Argentina.
In a concurrent fixture earlier on Monday, Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 to top Group J with six points. Lionel Messi scored two goals in that match, becoming the all-time top scorer in World Cup history. Argentina’s campaign began with a 3-0 defeat to Algeria, but their current form has secured their position at the summit of the group.
