Jocelyn Briski Sends Alabama Softball to the Winner’s Bracket of the Tuscaloosa Regional
Crimson Tide secure opening-day NCAA Tournament victory behind Briski’s shutout

The Alabama Crimson Tide softball team has advanced to the winner’s bracket of the NCAA Tournament Tuscaloosa Regional following an opening-day victory over Belmont. The win was secured through a dominant pitching performance by Jocelyn Briski, who recorded a one-hit shutout over seven innings while striking out seven batters and issuing just one walk.

Briski’s efficiency was notable, requiring only 72 pitches to complete the victory. Her record improved to 22-3 with the win. In contrast, Belmont’s pitcher Maya Johnson, who entered the contest with a 28-3 record, suffered only her third loss of the season. Johnson allowed three runs in the first inning, a period that proved decisive for the outcome of the match.

Alabama generated all of its offensive production in the first inning, capitalising on a sequence that began with Jena Young being hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout by Brooke Wells, Alexis Pupillo singled and stole second base, and Ana Roman walked to load the bases. Marlie Giles then drove in two runs with a single to right field. Young subsequently scored on a ground-out by Audrey Vandagriff to first base, extending the lead to three runs.

Despite the early advantage, the Crimson Tide did not register further offensive production for the remainder of the game. The victory ensures Alabama remains in the winner’s bracket, while Belmont faces elimination. The team’s performance was broadcast on ESPN+, with the program’s social media channels highlighting the result under the hashtags #Team30 and #RollTide.

In the other contest within the regional, USC Upstate defeated Southeastern Louisiana 5-4, eliminating the latter from tournament play. Alabama is scheduled to face USC Upstate in the next game, with a start time listed for either noon or 1 pm.
