Alabama’s road win over Mississippi State was the defining result in CBS Sports’ Week 5 review. Quarterback Keelon Russell threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns, adding a rushing score as the Crimson Tide secured a fifth straight dominant victory, according to the report.

Florida’s 45–17 loss to Missouri was the only defeat among the top 10 teams, CBS Sports said. Missouri controlled the line of scrimmage and held Florida running back Jadan Baugh to 13 yards rushing, turning a promising start to the Gators’ season into a setback.

Other ranked teams also stumbled. Michigan lost 20–14 to Minnesota, with quarterback Bryce Underwood completing 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards and throwing two interceptions. Penn State was beaten 34–13 by Northwestern and lost the rushing contest 413–48, according to CBS Sports.

The review also highlighted Wisconsin’s 31–3 win over Michigan State, Nebraska’s 48–23 victory over Maryland and Iowa State’s 45–42 win against West Virginia. Those results offered a wider picture of a week in which several teams shifted the outlook around their conferences.

CBS Sports’ account combines game results with assessments of teams’ prospects and coaching pressure. Its claims about Alabama’s title potential and the standing of individual coaches are commentary; the reported scores and player statistics are the concrete outcomes.
