Al-Hilal appoints Richard Hughes after Liverpool departure
The Saudi Arabian club says Hughes will oversee technical work, recruitment, scouting and integration across its football operations.
Al-Hilal has finalised a contract with Richard Hughes to become the club’s sporting director, days after he left the same role at Liverpool. The Saudi Arabian club said Hughes arrived on Sunday and has taken up the position.
Al-Hilal said the appointment is intended to improve the quality of technical work, develop recruitment and scouting processes, and strengthen integration across its football operations.
Hughes joined Liverpool from Bournemouth in 2024 and oversaw the appointment of Arne Slot as head coach following Jürgen Klopp’s departure. Liverpool said Hughes left to seek “a fresh challenge”.
The available details do not disclose the length or financial terms of Hughes’s contract. They also provide no evidence yet of changes made under his leadership at Al-Hilal.
Al-Hilal is Saudi Arabia’s most successful club, with 21 league titles and four Asian Championships.
