Afghanistan has taken a commanding 1-0 lead in its five-match one-day international series against Ireland, securing a 92-run victory in the second game at the Bready Cricket Club in Magheramason, Northern Ireland. The win follows the washout of the opening match, establishing Afghanistan as the dominant force in the series thus far.
The match, reduced to 47 overs per side due to rain, saw Afghanistan post a formidable total of 299-8. Opener Ibrahim Zadran anchored the innings with a top score of 84, providing the platform for the side to set a challenging target of 300 for Ireland.
Ireland’s chase began with promise but unraveled under the pressure of Afghanistan’s spin attack. Captain Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector fell to Rashid Khan in consecutive deliveries, ending a promising 72-run stand with Cade Carmichael. The early breakthroughs disrupted Ireland’s momentum, leaving them vulnerable to a subsequent collapse.
Khan finished with impressive figures of six wickets for 34 runs, marking his third “six for” in ODI cricket. His best bowling performance in the format remains 7-18 against the West Indies in 2017. Khan claimed four of the final seven wickets to fall, including the run-out of Lorcan Tucker, who was dismissed in a rare incident after an lbw appeal was turned down.
Ireland were ultimately bowled out for 207, losing seven wickets for just 63 runs during their innings. The series resumes in Belfast on Monday for the third ODI, with Afghanistan looking to extend their advantage.
