ADP stock lags S&P 500 as Wall Street maintains cautious Hold rating
Despite strong quarterly results and positive guidance, analysts remain divided on the payroll giant, with the consensus rating unchanged over the past three months.

Wall Street analysts have maintained a consensus "Hold" rating on Automatic Data Processing (ADP), reflecting a cautious outlook following the stock's underperformance relative to the broader market. Over the past 52 weeks, ADP shares have fallen 9.9%, a stark contrast to the 19.5% rally in the S&P 500 Index. On a year-to-date basis, the payroll and human resources company has returned nearly 6%, while the S&P 500 has risen 12.6%.
The divergence in performance has persisted despite recent positive financial indicators. ADP shares rose 3.5% on 29 July after the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 results. The company posted adjusted earnings per share of $2.64 and revenue of $5.47 billion. Employer Services revenue increased 7% year-over-year to $3.70 billion, with margins expanding to 34.4%, while PEO Services revenue also rose 7% to $1.78 billion.
Investor sentiment was further supported by the company's fiscal 2027 guidance, which projects 9% to 11% adjusted EPS growth, 5% to 6% revenue growth, and 70 to 90 basis points of EBIT-margin expansion from fiscal 2026's 26.8%. Analysts currently expect ADP's adjusted EPS to grow 10.3% year-over-year to $12.26 for the fiscal year ending in June 2027. The company has a promising track record of beating consensus estimates in each of the last four quarters.
The current consensus rating is based on input from 19 analysts, comprising four "Strong Buy" ratings, 13 "Holds," one "Moderate Sell," and one "Strong Sell." This configuration has remained unchanged over the past three months. The mean price target stands at $289.35, representing a 5.7% premium to current price levels, while the Street-high target of $322 suggests potential upside of 17.6%.
Cantor Fitzgerald recently adjusted its stance on the stock, raising ADP's price target to $295 on 22 July while maintaining an "Overweight" rating. This move aligns with the broader analyst view that the stock offers value despite its recent lag behind the State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF, which increased 22.3% over the past 52 weeks.
ADP, based in Roseland, New Jersey, remains a global leader in HR and payroll solutions with a market cap of $105.7 billion. The company supports over 1.1 million clients across more than 140 countries, leveraging over 75 years of expertise in workforce management, compliance, and payroll services.
