49ers offensive line competition remains unsettled as rookie Carver Willis enters fray

The San Francisco 49ers remain without a definitive answer at the starting left guard position, with rookie offensive lineman Carver Willis now officially inserted into the competition. Willis earned reps with the first team during Saturday’s practice and continued with the top group on Sunday as the coaching staff searches for a solution for the fifth spot on the starting offensive line.

The path for the fifth-round draft pick was initially obstructed by a concussion that sidelined him during early camp sessions. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster had indicated earlier that Willis was intended to be rotated into the lineup before the injury occurred. However, the lack of a breakout performer among the existing options has kept the window open for the rookie to re-enter the race.

Veteran Robert Jones has assumed the first-team reps at left guard following second-year player Connor Colby’s departure from the position. Despite Jones taking over, he has not sufficiently cemented his status as the starter, leaving the team to evaluate other possibilities. The absence of a clear frontrunner has allowed Willis, who played college tackle but was projected by analysts to transition to guard or centre, to remain in contention.

Willis’s elevation to the first-team offense follows a notable performance in the preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans. Although he did not start the match, he played 33 snaps and received the highest grade among all 49ers offensive players with at least 10 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. This showing has contributed to his current standing in the battle for the starting job.

The 49ers are now preparing for joint practices and a preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers. These upcoming sessions will provide Willis with further opportunities to compete for the left guard role, as the team looks to resolve the uncertainty at the position before the regular season begins.
