49ers and Rams split on travel strategy for Melbourne NFL debut
San Francisco arrives a week early to acclimatise, while Los Angeles is expected to travel just 24 hours before the match.

The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams have adopted contrasting logistical approaches ahead of the National Football League’s inaugural game in Australia. The fixture, scheduled for 10:35 a.m. local time on Friday, 11 September, presents a significant governance challenge regarding player recovery and time zone adjustment.
The 49ers arrived in Melbourne on Thursday, a full week before the contest, to conduct practices and adjust to the local environment. Head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged the physical toll of the journey, noting that the extended stay was recommended to mitigate the impact on the body.
Conversely, the Rams are expected to travel to Melbourne only the day before the match, remaining in the city for a single night before returning to Los Angeles. Head coach Sean McVay has remained coy about the specific details, describing the itinerary as a "loose idea" but maintaining that the team is leaving later than most would expect.
This short-trip model mirrors the Rams’ approach to last year’s game in London, where the squad spent just over 30 hours in the capital. McVay characterised that previous venture as a business trip, a strategy that appears to be replicated for the Melbourne fixture.
Stanford University sleep expert Dr. Cheri Mah has been consulted to assess the performance implications of these divergent strategies. Mah, who previously established sleep curricula with the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles, emphasises that sleep is a critical investment for athlete recovery and injury prevention.
While the 49ers prioritise gradual acclimatisation, the Rams rely on a minimised exposure to the 17-hour time difference. San Francisco edge rusher Keion White indicated he intends to sleep for the duration of the 16-hour flight, highlighting the individual efforts required to manage the physiological demands of international travel.
