The San Francisco 49ers have executed a roster adjustment at the opening of training camp, re-signing veteran defensive lineman Kevin Givens and waiving fellow defensive lineman Evan Anderson on Sunday. The move coincides with the start of the team’s preseason preparations, marking a shift in the defensive line composition ahead of the 2026 season.
Givens, an undrafted free agent who originally joined the club in 2019, returns to the organisation after spending the offseason unsigned. His return follows a seven-season tenure with the 49ers, during which he recorded 70 games played, 14 starts, 92 tackles, 8.0 sacks, and two fumble recoveries.
To accommodate Givens on the 90-man roster, the team waived Anderson, a 2024 draft pick. Anderson spent the 2025 season on the practice squad after appearing in 12 games with one start during his rookie campaign, where he recorded 24 tackles, 1.0 sack, and one fumble recovery.
The decision to swap the two defensive linemen reflects the 49ers’ strategy to retain experienced depth while managing roster spots. Givens’ re-signing provides continuity for a player who has been with the organisation since 2019, while Anderson’s departure ends a stint that began with his selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
