Startup adds molten salt reactor design to roadmap to meet surging AI data centre power needs

Fusion power startup Zap Energy has announced a partial strategic pivot to develop nuclear fission reactors alongside its existing fusion device roadmap. The decision marks a significant shift for the company, which aims to secure immediate electricity supply for artificial intelligence data centres while awaiting the commercial viability of grid-ready fusion power.

Chief Executive Officer Zabrina Johal stated that the move is designed to address urgent electricity demands from AI data centres, which are projected to nearly triple by 2030. She noted that while fusion has achieved net energy gain in experiments, it remains years away from providing the reliable power required by the sector.

To execute this strategy, Zap Energy intends to utilise a molten salt-cooled fission reactor design known as the 4S. This design was jointly developed by Toshiba and Japan's power industry research institute. The company asserts that the 4S design carries no intellectual property entanglement, despite the fact that the specific reactor has never been built.

The startup plans to generate revenue from the fission business within a year through federal programs and milestone payments from large energy users. This business model mirrors the customer co-investment program previously employed by ASML for extreme ultraviolet lithography, where manufacturers underwrote research and development in exchange for reserved production capacity.

Johal argues that developing fission technology will accelerate progress on materials testing and power systems for its fusion goals. Additionally, the company believes the venture will help build relationships with regulators, such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which has issued separate guidelines distinguishing fusion from fission technologies.

The announcement comes amidst growing public interest in fission startups, following X-energy's recent initial public offering. While other fusion firms have pursued side businesses to generate cash flow, Zap Energy's approach involves a more substantial entry into the commercial fission market to bridge the gap until fusion becomes a grid-ready reality.
