YouTube now lets you offload your playlist curation to AI
Platform introduces text-based prompt feature to generate and pin custom video collections

YouTube has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature titled 'Your custom feed', enabling users to generate personalised video playlists through descriptive text prompts. The tool allows subscribers to define specific interests, hobbies, or daily routines, which the system then curates into a dedicated feed. These custom streams can be pinned to the top of the user’s homepage for persistent access, streamlining the discovery process for recurring content types.

Access to the feature is facilitated via a dedicated chip located at the top of the home page. Users enter a prompt into a text box to describe the desired content, with Google providing examples such as "15-minute HIIT workouts that don't need any equipment and zero jumping" or "deep-dive tech podcasts to learn more about using AI for work." The interface allows users to edit their prompt at any time from the custom feed to generate a new playlist, offering flexibility in content selection.

The launch of 'Your custom feed' comes shortly after YouTube’s recent release of tools designed to detect and label AI-generated videos. This development marks a shift in the platform’s approach to artificial intelligence, moving from identification of synthetic content to its active application in user experience and content organisation. The feature is currently rolling out to signed-in users in the United States on mobile and desktop platforms.

To utilise the service, users must have English language settings enabled and have their YouTube search and watch history turned on within their account settings. The requirement for enabled watch history suggests that the personalisation algorithm relies on past user data to refine the relevance of the generated playlists. The rollout is currently limited to the US, with no immediate details provided regarding expansion to other regions or languages.

The move aligns YouTube with broader industry trends in AI-driven curation. Spotify released a similar 'Prompted Playlist' tool for music and podcasts earlier this year, indicating a competitive push towards natural language interfaces for content discovery. While the specific algorithmic criteria used to generate these playlists remain undisclosed, the feature represents a significant step in how major digital platforms are integrating generative AI into their core user interfaces.
