YouTube's picture-in-picture mode is rolling out to all users worldwide
Streaming giant expands mobile video utility to non-subscribers with new Android and iOS updates

YouTube has officially initiated a global rollout of its picture-in-picture mode for Android and iOS users, eliminating the previous requirement for a Premium subscription. This update marks a significant shift in accessibility, allowing the feature to be utilised by a wider audience beyond paying subscribers.

The new functionality enables videos to continue playing within a movable mini-player when the application is minimised via the home button or a swipe-up gesture. Once activated, users can close the YouTube app and continue viewing their content in the background without interruption.

While the announcement indicates the mode is rolling out to all users worldwide, the deployment is not immediate. Team YouTube states that the feature will appear in more and more accounts over the coming months, meaning it could take several months to reach the majority of users globally.

A key distinction remains between regions regarding content eligibility. US users retain full access to the feature for both music and non-music content, mirroring the experience previously available only to Premium subscribers in the country. However, international users outside the United States are currently limited to longform, non-music videos only.

This global expansion follows the feature's earlier introduction in the US market, where it was first launched for Android Premium subscribers in 2018 and subsequently for iOS users in 2021. The support documentation confirms that the user experience for people in the United States will remain unchanged by this update.

For the international market, the restriction on music content represents a specific limitation during this rollout phase. It remains unclear if this constraint regarding music videos will be permanent or subject to future changes as the feature matures across different territories.
