Yankees take Game 1 as Schlittler and Rice overwhelm Red Sox

The New York Yankees opened their American League Wild Card Series rematch against the Boston Red Sox with a 9-0 win on Tuesday night, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, according to ESPN.

Cam Schlittler struck out 10 and allowed two hits and one walk over 6⅓ innings. He threw 117 pitches as Boston struggled to turn its chances into offence.

Ben Rice supplied the decisive power, hitting two home runs, including a late grand slam, and driving in six runs. He also doubled and finished with four hits.

The Yankees played without Aaron Judge, who was sidelined with a calf injury, while Austin Wells drove in two runs. George Lombard Jr. recorded three hits in his postseason debut.

Boston starter Payton Tolle allowed one run on five hits over 4⅔ innings before leaving with the Red Sox trailing 1-0. New York’s win puts it one victory from advancing in the series.
