Yankees recall Anthony Volpe as José Caballero placed on injured list following hand fracture

The New York Yankees have recalled shortstop Anthony Volpe from Triple-A to the major league roster, a move necessitated by the placement of starting shortstop José Caballero on the ten-day injured list. The roster adjustment follows an injury sustained by Caballero while diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt, resulting in a broken right middle finger. Volpe is expected to arrive in Baltimore ahead of the game against the Orioles, where Max Schuemann is scheduled to start at shortstop for the immediate contest.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone characterised the injury as a small fracture, noting that the tendons and ligaments remain intact. While the injury primarily impacts Caballero's throwing ability and has hindered his defensive utility, Boone confirmed that the player's hitting remained effective despite the issue. Caballero was able to hit and pinch-run in the ninth inning of the game prior to the injury, though he was unable to throw effectively the following day and is scheduled to see a hand specialist in New York.

General Manager Brian Cashman addressed the decision-making process behind the roster moves, stating that the earlier demotion of Volpe was made to honour Caballero's emergence as a superior defensive option. Cashman noted that the organisation's increased depth allowed them to make difficult decisions, acknowledging that Caballero's performance had snuck up on the team. He indicated that the expectation is for Caballero to retake the starting shortstop job upon his return from the injured list.

Volpe, who had been demoted following his rehab from offseason shoulder surgery, returns to the majors after a stint in the minors where he posted a .221 average in eighteen games. The Yankees acquired Caballero in a minor deal with the Tampa Bay Rays at last year's trade deadline, and he served as a utility player before taking over as the starting shortstop this season. Boone remarked that the team is hopeful Caballero will miss the minimum ten days, though the injury occurred on Sunday and the player was out of the starting lineup Monday.

The recall comes as the Yankees navigate a period where they have lost four straight games, despite maintaining the American League's best run differential and a second-best record. The structural changes to the infield rotation reflect the club's willingness to utilise roster depth to manage player workload and injury risks, with the organisation prioritising long-term roster management over immediate lineup stability.
