Yankees place Bellinger on injured list, intensifying trade deadline pressure

The New York Yankees have placed outfielder Cody Bellinger on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, compounding an already severe offensive deficit as the club approaches the trade deadline. The injury occurred during the eighth inning of a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, when Bellinger sustained the issue while running the bases after legging out a double.
Spencer Jones was called up to the major leagues as a corresponding move to fill the roster spot. Bellinger, who had gone 16 for 43 with a .372 average in his previous 12 games, initially described the sensation as a tightness he believed was minor. However, he later conceded that staying in the game was not the smartest decision, and the team has not provided a timetable for his return.
The absence of Bellinger leaves the Yankees without their starting right fielder Aaron Judge, starting left fielder Bellinger, and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton. Judge is not yet ready to resume baseball activities and is unlikely to return before September, while Stanton remains on the injured list. This trio of absences has significantly impacted the team’s scoring output, which has dropped from an average of 5.27 runs per game before Judge’s injury to just 3.25 in their last 32 games.
Despite winning nine of their last 12 games, the Yankees’ inability to generate consistent offense has heightened expectations for activity at the trade deadline. Management is anticipated to seek bullpen help, a catcher, and a right-handed platoon outfielder. Depending on the severity of Bellinger’s condition, the club may be pushed to acquire a more everyday outfield option rather than a platoon player.
Potential targets identified for the deadline include Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels, Heliot Ramos of the San Francisco Giants, and Lane Thomas of the Kansas City Royals. The Yankees are also monitoring Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox and Spencer Steer of the Cincinnati Reds, with Trent Grisham set to become a free agent after the season, adding urgency to the outfield search.
