Yankees lose Jazz Chisholm Jr. to injured list with thumb sprain
New York’s second baseman will undertake no baseball activities for seven to 10 days after injuring his right thumb during a slide.
The New York Yankees have placed second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right thumb, adding to the club’s injury concerns with 18 games remaining in the regular season.
Chisholm injured the thumb while sliding into second base during Tuesday’s 5–3 win over the Colorado Rockies. His thumb appeared to strike the cleat of Colorado shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, and he was later removed after making a poor throw while fielding a ground ball.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Chisholm would be shut down from baseball activities for seven to 10 days before his condition is reassessed. The timetable does not establish a confirmed return date.
Jose Caballero started at second base on Wednesday. Anthony Volpe, who has recently played second base for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, is another potential option for New York.
The injury interrupts Chisholm’s strongest recent stretch. He is hitting .391 over his past 15 games and is batting .232 with 19 home runs, 55 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in 134 games this season.
Chisholm, who is due to become a free agent after the season, is the fourth Yankees player placed on the injured list since 23 August and the 18th to go on the list this season. The report was published by Fox Sports with reporting from The Associated Press.
