Second baseman’s celebratory gesture comes after Aaron Boone addressed on-field conduct

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that he has addressed a conduct issue involving second baseman Jazz Chisholm after the player was spotted with a lollipop in his mouth while playing the field. The incident occurred during a game against the Detroit Tigers, where the Yankees were trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning. Boone stated on Tuesday that he had spoken to Chisholm and considered the matter resolved, though he admitted to being annoyed by the occurrence.

The Yankees manager noted that he was unaware of the incident until after Monday’s game concluded. Boone emphasised that while he had addressed the behaviour, the situation was not significant enough to warrant further disciplinary action. Chisholm subsequently confirmed that the conversation with Boone regarding the matter would remain private between the two parties.

The lollipop incident marked the second time Chisholm had been seen with the confectionery item during the current season. He had previously been observed with a lollipop in his mouth during an at-bat against the Boston Red Sox in April. In the instance on Monday, Chisholm did not have to make a defensive play while the lollipop was in his mouth, according to reports.

Chisholm’s on-field conduct drew attention again on Tuesday when he hit a go-ahead two-run home run against the Tigers in the top of the sixth inning. Upon returning to the dugout, the second baseman displayed a bucket of lollipops to the camera, a gesture that appeared to reference the previous day’s reprimand.

Statistically, Chisholm has recorded 12 home runs in 52 games this season, including six of those hits in his last 18 games. He began the season slowly, not hitting his first home run until New York’s 25th game on April 23. To address an early-season slump, Chisholm adopted a routine of using Giancarlo Stanton’s pants and, subsequently, Aaron Judge’s bats.

Chisholm is in his second full season with the Yankees after being acquired from the Miami Marlins at the 2024 trade deadline. He will become a free agent following the conclusion of this season. Last year, he joined Bobby Bonds and Alfonso Soriano as the only players in Yankees history to achieve a 30-home run and 30-stolen base season.
