Fantasy Football Roundtable: Here are our biggest offseason risers going into the 2026 NFL season
Roster shifts and schematic adjustments drive projections for Montgomery, Tuten, Downs, and McConkey

Yahoo Sports analysts Justin Boone, Joel Smyth, Matt Harmon, and Scott Pianowski have identified four players as the primary 'offseason risers' for fantasy football ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The selection is driven by roster changes and anticipated offensive scheme adjustments. D’Andre Montgomery is projected to become the lead running back for the Houston Texans following his trade from the Detroit Lions. Bhayshul Tuten is expected to secure a high-volume role in the Jacksonville Jaguars' backfield, retaining receiving duties despite the addition of Chris Rodríguez Jr. Josh Downs is set to assume a starting role with the Indianapolis Colts after the departure of Michael Pittman Jr. and AD Mitchell. Ladd McConkey’s ranking has risen due to expectations of improved offensive line protection and a condensed passing scheme under the Los Angeles Chargers.

Montgomery’s trade to the Houston Texans occurred in early March, ending his tenure with the Detroit Lions where he was previously behind Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery is expected to face little competition for touches, with backup Woody Marks likely limited to a pass-catching role. Montgomery previously handled at least 235 touches in each of his first five NFL seasons, including a 'bell-cow' role with the Chicago Bears.

Bhayshul Tuten recorded the second-best success rate among running backs in the NFL in 2025, despite a mid-season injury. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Chris Rodríguez Jr. in the offseason but did not draft any running backs in the first 10 selections. Rodríguez has seven career targets over three seasons, suggesting Tuten will retain the receiving role previously held by Travis Etienne Jr. The Jaguars’ offensive playcaller has averaged the most running back screens in the NFL since taking over in 2024.

Josh Downs is projected to start as the Z receiver in addition to his slot duties, allowing him to play in two-receiver sets. Downs appears to have bulked up to handle more snaps, addressing a previous limitation where the Colts relied on heavy personnel. This structural shift follows the departure of Michael Pittman Jr. and AD Mitchell, clearing a path for Downs to assume a high-volume starting role with the Indianapolis Colts.

Ladd McConkey showed 'star quality' in the second half of the 2024 season. The Los Angeles Chargers’ passing game in 2024 was hindered by cluster injuries to the offensive line. Analysts project that improved pass protection, combined with a condensed passing scheme under head coach Mike McDaniel, will elevate McConkey’s fantasy output in his third season.
