Yacht Club Games Confirms May 29 Release for Mina the Hollower Amidst Studio Survival Hopes
Developed over six years, the game arrives on May 29 for $19.99, with studio head Sean Velasco describing the launch as a make-or-break moment for the company's future viability.

Yacht Club Games has officially confirmed the release date for its latest action-adventure title, Mina the Hollower, setting the launch for May 29. The game will be available across a wide range of platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Priced at $19.99, the title marks the culmination of a six-year development cycle that saw the studio navigate significant financial strain and subsequent downsizing.
The game adopts a distinct 8-bit gothic horror aesthetic reminiscent of classic Game Boy Color titles, drawing visual and thematic inspiration from legendary franchises such as The Legend of Zelda and Castlevania. Players assume the role of Mina, a mouse protagonist equipped with a whip and the unique ability to burrow underground. This mechanic allows for short-distance traversal and temporary invincibility, set within a world the developer describes as full of mystery and horror. The title features smooth 60fps combat, aiming to deliver a polished experience despite the retro visual style.
Studio head and co-founder Sean Velasco has characterised the project as a make-or-break moment for Yacht Club Games, highlighting the precarious financial position the studio faced during development. In previous discussions, Velasco outlined specific sales thresholds that would determine the company's future trajectory. He indicated that selling 500,000 copies would be a golden outcome, while 200,000 would be considered great, with sales of only 100,000 viewed as a poor result for the studio's survival.
The release date finalises a spring window previously announced by the developer, correcting an earlier plan for a Halloween launch. The initial schedule for a release last year was delayed to allow for final polish and balancing, ensuring the game truly shines before hitting the market. This adjustment reflects the studio's commitment to quality following the intense pressure of the development period.
Mina the Hollower arrives as a direct successor to the critical success of the Shovel Knight series, which established Yacht Club Games as a significant player in the indie sector. The studio's ability to sustain operations through the long development phase underscores the importance of this upcoming launch. As the title prepares to hit stores, the industry watches to see if the game can meet the ambitious sales targets required to secure the studio's long-term future.
